Veliko Tarnovo is a town located in northern Bulgaria. The town is the capital of the Second Bulgarian State and the Principality of Bulgaria in the period 1878-1879.
In the Middle Ages it was named Tarnovgrad, gradually becoming known as Tarnovo. In 1963, „ Veliko (meaning Great) " was added before the name in honor of the city's former glory. Thanks to its rich cultural and historical heritage Veliko Tarnovo is an important tourist center. The town is situated between the Danube Plain and Stara Planina Mountain on the first hills of the Pre-Balkan. The patron of the town is St. Patriarch Evtimii, whose monument rises above the building of Veliko Tarnovo University.
The town is situated along the Yantra River. It intersects major roads linking Eastern with Western Bulgaria. A European transport corridor №9 passes through Veliko Tarnovo. The relief of the Municipality of Veliko Tarnovo is diverse - plain-hilly and mountainous. The town is located 208 meters above sea level on the slopes of the beautiful gorges and meanders of the Yantra River. It is naturally protected by the river and the rock wreaths surrounding it. Veliko Tarnovo is situated on several hills. The hills of Tsarevets, Trapezitsa and Momina fortress were the main centers of kings and boyars were located during the Second Bulgarian State. Mount Sveta Gora was a spiritual and literary center, a part of it is the Rectorate of Veliko Tarnovo University today. The Garga Bair hill is located north of Trapezitsa. On the Orlovets hill are the Varusha area and the Akatsia and Kartala areas, the highest point is 241 meters high. The Troshana Hill is located south of Mount Sveta Gora and west of the Motela Dam, and Veliko Tarnovo Hills is being built there.
The Audiovisual Spectacle Sound and Light, which incorporates light, sound and verbal effects, is a historical tale of the most important moments of Bulgarian history. It was first held in 1985 in honor of the 800th anniversary of the uprising of Asen and Peter. The show synchronizes in a unique way colorful lights, dramatic music, laser beams, lightning and bells that tell the story of Bulgaria. Sound and Light is broadcast year-round, regardless of the weather conditions, and can be observed free of charge at the official holidays and the town's holidays from the square in front of Tsarevets. On any other day, the show may be broadcast for a fee if requested by individual clients or organized groups. Then it is monitored by a specially designed restricted access site. Star Voices over Tsarevets ” is an international folklore and ethno, pop and jazz competition. The idea of the festival is to popularize folklore and show how it is related to contemporary ethno-pop and ethno-jazz musical culture. It is held in the middle of September.
