Borovets is the first resort in Bulgaria located in the municipality of Samokov, Sofia district.
The place dates back to 1896 as a recreation resort.
In the 60s and 70s of the 20th century Borovets was developed as a ski resort, extending with the construction of the first Alpine-style hotels and winter sports facilities. The resort has twice hosted Alpine Ski World Cup 9 (in 1981 and 1984).
Borovets is the closest to Sofia winter resort and is situated at 1350m above sea level on the northern slopes of the Rila Mountain.
The climate in the resort is moderate, the winter is soft with a lot of snowfall.
The average temperature in January - the coldest month - is about minus 5 º C.
