Sofia is a city located in the central part of Western Bulgaria and declared capital on April 3, 1879. The town bears the name of the late antique cathedral „ Saint Sofia„. The city's feast is on September 17, when the Orthodox Church celebrates the Holy Martyrs Sofia, Vyara, Nadezhda and Lyubov. It is also celebrated on January 4, when in 1878, the Russian troops liberated the city from the Ottoman rule. Sofia is surrounded by mountains: Vitosha to the south, Lyulin to the west and Stara Planina to the north. This makes it the fourth-highest city in Europe.
There are mineral springs in the city center as well as in some neighborhoods.
